Amsterdam 2007 > Barcelona 1900

Vandaag naar Amsterdam geweest; Van Gogh Museum: tentoonstelling Barcelona 1900 en Japanse prenten in boeken. Ook het gebouw, vooral het deel dat is ontworpen door Rietveld, is de moeite waard. Op het Museumplein werd volop geschaatst op de tijdelijke schaatsbaan.


Went to Amsterdam today; Van Gogh Museum: exhibition Barcelona 1900 and Japanese prints in books. The buildings, especially the part designed by Rietveld, are nice. On the square (Museumplein) in front of the Rijksmuseum skaters enjoyed themselves on the free skating rink.

Het is a.s. maandag (17 december) 50 jaar geleden dat Dorothy L. Sayers stierf. BBC radio 7 zendt een aantal van de hoorspelen uit die door de BBC van haar boeken zijn gemaakt. De komende week Unnatural Death.

Ik heb lang geleden al haar detective-verhalen gelezen (samen met A.). Recent ben ik begonnen met het lezen van boeken over deze excentrieke schrijfster, die een interessant leven heeft geleid. Zo was ze een van de eerste vrouwen die in Oxford (af)studeerde, werkte ze als tekstschrijver voor een Londons reclamebureau, heeft ze tijdens haar leven verborgen weten te houden dat ze een buitenechtelijke zoon had en zo zijn er, gezien de tijd dat ze leefde, nog meer opvallende gebeurtenissen geweest.



Long ago I have read (together with A.) all of her detective stories. Recently I started to read books about this eccentric author, who lived an interesting life. She was one of the first women to study in and graduated from Oxford, she worked as a copywriter for a London advertisement company, she kept her whole life a secret the birth of her son. And there were more noteworthy events in light of the era she lived in.

Sinterklaas is weer weg uit het land... Santa Claus (Dutch one) left the country...

Ik ben te oud om zelf Sinterklaas te vieren (hoewel... speculaas, pepernoten en kruidnoten...), maar afgelopen zaterdag heb ik gezien hoe kinderen nog steeds van dit traditionele feest kunnen genieten, vlakbij huis, op de Groenezoom waar de winkeliers weer een speurtocht hadden georganiseerd, met dit keer als hoogtepunt een wedstrijd schilderen in een artotheek, onder leiding van de Schilderpiet.



I am too old to celebrate Sinterklaas myself (however I like the special spicy cookies...), but last Saturday I noticed that childeren still enjoy this traditional celebration, close to my home, on the Groenezoom, where shopkeepers had organised a treasure hunt, with this time as a highlight a painting competition in a gallery.

The displays in Wereldwinkel (Fair Trade shop) Vreewijk in Rotterdam are designed by designer/stylist/illustrator Annemiek van der Hoek. She already kept a digital diary, but now also has a beautiful website.

D en ik zijn naar het concert van Rory Block in Theater De Stoep in Spijkenisse geweest. Fenomenale blues... vooral de songs van Robert Johnson. M, de grootste fan, kon niet mee vanwege een zakenreis. We hebben Rory's laatste CD voor hem gekocht.


D and I went to the concert of Rory Block in theater De Stoep in Spijkenisse. Phenomenal blues, especially the Robert Johnson songs. M, the greatest fan, couldn't go, because of a business trip. We bought Rory's latest CD for him.

Charlotte Salomon

De dag dat we de Hermitage bezochten, hadden we - dankzij de vouwfietsen - 's middags nog genoeg tijd voor een bezoek aan het Joods Historisch Museum. Zoals altijd indrukwekkend; de stem van cantor Hans Bloemendal als je door de hoofdruimte loopt... rillingen. Op de afdeling geschiedenis werd het me zoals altijd allemaal teveel bij de Tweede Wereldoorlog, met als gevolg dat ik de jaren erna weer alleen maar vluchtig heb bekeken.

Bijzonder was een tentoonstelling in de kelder over het werk van Charlotte Salomon: Leben?Oder Theater? In de museumwinkel was een prachtige CD-rom te koop met al haar werk. Ik heb deze ook aan AM gegeven; haar tekeningen doen me namelijk erg aan die van CS denken.

The day we visited the Hermitage, we also had time to go to the Jewish Historical Museum, thanks to the folding bikes. As always impressive; the voice of cantor Bloemendal while walking through the main hall... shivers. At the history department as usual I couldn't cope well at the Second World War exhibitions, resulting in again not having seen much of the fifties, sixties and beyond.

In the basement was an exhibition of the work of Charlotte Salomon: Leben? Onder Theater? In the museum shop a beautiful CD-rom with all her work was for sale. I also gave this to AM, whose drawings remind me of those of CS. AM is working on a website...

Het is lang geleden../It is long ago...

...dat ik tijd kon vinden voor een nieuw bericht. De tijd is zo snel gegaan - door allerlei ontwikkelingen, vooral op werkgebied.

Maar gelukkig altijd nog wel tijd gevonden voor andere leuke zaken (hetgeen niet wil zeggen dat werk niet leuk is, in tegendeel).

...that I could find time for a new post. Time went so fast - due to all kinds of developments, especially in the working area.

But luckily I always have found time for other nice things (which does not mean work is not fun, au contraire).

Zo waren M. en ik in september nog net op tijd op de prachtige tentoonstelling over het oude Perzie in de Hermitage in Amsterdam te zien.

I.e. in september M. and I were just in time to view the wonderful exhibition about ancient Persia in the Hermitage in Amsterdam.

Middelburg

Donderdag (30 augustus) met trein en vouwfiets naar Middelburg. Erg druk, vanwege de markt, maar het herbouwde, in juni opnieuw geopende Zeeuws Museum, maakte dat goed. Tentoonstellingen van de topstukken in bijna kale ruimtes, onder de originele balken. Het museum is gevestigd in de Abdij, waarvan de toren, bijgenaamd de Lange Jan, het bekendste gebouw van de Zeeuwse hoofdstad is.

On Thursday (August 30th) by train and folding bike to Middelburg. Very busy, due to the weekly market, but the renovated, last June reopened Zeeuws Museum, made up for that. Exhibits of the most precious pieces in almost bare rooms, beneath the original beams. The museum is housed in the Abbey, of which the tower, nicknamed Long John, is the most well-known building of the capital of the province of Zeeland.

Op de Vismarkt werd een kleine antiek & curiosamarkt gehouden. On the Vismarkt (Fishmarket) a small antiques & curiosities market was held. Veel leuker dan de grote markt. Much nicer that the bigger market.





Onze vouwfietsen brachten ons (M. en ik) overal en snel, zelfs naar Goes. Our folding bikes took us (M. and me) everywhere and fast, even to Goes.

NAi/Le Corbusier

Afgelopen dinsdag de Le Corbusier tentoonstelling in het NAi in Rotterdam bezocht en daarna Villa Sonneveld. De eerste was indrukwekkend door de prachtige maquettes en andere presentaties. Een goed tijdsbeeld. De tweede deed me op een bepaalde manier denken aan het Witte Dorp, officieel De Kiefhoek, in Rotterdam-Zuid, waar ik de eerste jaren van mijn leven heb gewoond. Waarschijnlijk door de structuur van de muren, want verder hebben de arbeiderswoningen weinig overeenkomsten met deze riante villa. Mooie Gispen meubelen, maar ik vind niet dat kunststof - in tegenstelling tot hout - er in de loop van de jaren mooier op wordt. Een krasje op een houten tafelblad stoort niet, een vlek op een kunststof oppervlak van bijvoorbeeld een kast, doet de schoonheid van het hele object teniet.

Last Tuesday I visited Le Corbusier exhibtion in the NAI in Rotterdam and after that Villa Sonneveld. The first was impressive because of the beautiful scale models and other presentations. A good portrait of an era. The second in a way made me think of the Witte Dorp (white village), officially De Kiefhoek, a neighbourhood of Rotterdam South, where I lived the first years of my life. Probably due to the structure of the walls, because the modest, small houses, built for workers, have little in common with this spacious villa. Beautiful Gispen furniture, but I do not think that synthetic materials improve in time, like wood does. A scratch on a wooden table top doesn't matter, a spot on a surface of for instance a cupboard, made of a synthetic material, destroys the beauty of the whole object.

Er mochten van de tentoonstelling over Le Corbusier geen foto's worden gemaakt; dus slechts een paar opnames van het exterieur.

Taking pictures of the Le Corbusier exhibition was forbidden, so here are some shots of the exterior.



Vanaf het terras/From the terrace: uitzicht op de beelden aan de voorkant/ a view of the scuptures in the front. De vogel is echter echt. The bird however is real.

Over vogels gesproken. Op het terras (voor een kopje koffie) kregen we gezelschap van deze eend met kind.

Paarse eendjes in de vijver van het NAi. Purple ducks in the pond in front of the NAi. Paars is tijdens het Architectuurjaar 2007 de kleur waarmee wordt getoond dat een gebouw daarin belangrijk is. During the Year of Architecture 2007 purple is the colour used to define the significance of a building.

Fotomuseum Rotterdam

C. was zaterdag 71 jaar geworden, als hij had geleefd. Een paar mooie rode rozen bij zijn foto gezet en zondag aan hem gedacht toen ik naar de jazzfoto's van Ed van der Elsken in het Fotomuseum keek. Prachtige portretten van Louis Armstrong (van wie C. zoveel van hield) en van andere jazzgrootheden, zoals Stan Getz, John Coltrane en Miles Davis. Ook was het de laatste dag van Dutch Eyes, een tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse fotografie. Goed overzicht dat duidelijk maakte dat fotografie een kunstvorm is, maar dat foto's ook vaak in opdracht worden gemaakt van bedrijven, overheid of wetenschappers. Daarom niet minder indrukwekkend. Er waren heel wat foto's te bewonderen van de maatschappelijk betrokken Cas Oorthuys, van wie ik sinds ik heb meegewerkt aan een serie boeken over de Tweede Wereldoorlog een bewonderaar ben. Mooi boek gekocht met zijn foto's: Rotterdam herzien. Buitengekomen een paar foto's genomen van de Wilhelminapier, een steeds aangenamer wordende plek op Zuid.

C. would have been 71 on Saturday, had he lived. I put some nice red roses near his photo and thought about him on Sunday while watching the jazz photos of Ed van der Elsken in the Fotomuseum. Beautiful portraits of Louis Armstrong (who C. loved so much) and of other jazz greats, like Stan Getz, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. It was also the last day of Dutch Eyes, an exhibition about the history of Dutch photography. A good overview, which made clear that although photography is an art, many pictures are made in assignment for companies, government and science. Of course not less impressive because of this. There were many photos to be admired by the socially engaged photographer Cas Oorthuys, of whom I have been an admirer since I worked on a book series about the Second World War. Bought a nice book with his photographs: Rotterdam revisited. Outside I took some pictures of the Wilhelminapier, becoming more and more a very pleasant spot on South.
