Monday the 12th M. and I went to Amsterdam for two exhibitions:
Maria Sybilla Merian & Daughters in the
Rembrandt House and
Lectori Salutem in the
Allard Pierson Museum. The first one beautiful and interesting but I don't like to be surrounded by too many people who have their audio tours on too loud, so after that the Allard Pierson was quite a relieve (no audio tours, only texts to read, silent and cool, very nice since it was very hot outside).
Maria Sybilla (1647-1717) must have been an interesting and strong woman, so I bought a book about her life (by Inez van Dullemen). For instance: she travelled to Suriname in 1699, not to have cups of tea with the notables, but to study nature and made beautiful, very detailed drawings of plants and flowers but above all insects. In the Alllard Pierson we also saw an exhibition about advertising campaigns by publishing companies through the years. I noticed a few things I own myself, i.e. a children's book and a bag that was given to customers by the American Book Centre when they celebrated their 35 years existence. I always take this bag with me because it can can hold many books and - also not unimportant in this country - it will keep them dry.
We also spent some time in the park at the Weteringplantsoen, watching the boats and dogs swimming in the water, realizing C. and M. must have spent many hours here.
Tweede pinksterdag gingen M. en ik naar Amsterdam voor twee exposities:
Maria Sybilla Merian en dochters in het
Rembrandthuis en
Lectori Salutem in het
Allard Pierson Museum. De eerste prachtig en interessant, alleen houd ik er niet van om omringd te zijn door te veel mensen die het geluid van hun audiotours te hard hebben aanstaan, dus was daarna het Allard Pierson een verademing (geen audiotours, teksten om te lezen, stil en koel, erg prettig omdat het buiten die dag heel heet was). Maria Sybilla (1647 -1717) moet een interessante en sterke vrouw zijn geweest, dus heb ik een boek over haar leven gekocht (geschreven door
Inez van Dullemen). Ze reisde bijvoorbeeld naar Suriname in 1699, niet om kopjes thee te drinken met de notabelen, maar om de natuur te bestuderen en prachtige tekeningen te maken van bloemen en planten en vooral van insecten. Op deze

In het Allard Pierson hebben we ook nog een tentoonstelling bezocht over de reclamecampagnes van uitgeverijen dor de jaren. Ik herkende een paar dingen die ik zelf ook bezit (zoals een kinderboekje uit de Gouden boekjes reeks: Sam de Brandweerkat en een tas die door het American Book Center was uitgereikt aan klanten ter gelegenheid van hun 35 jarig bestaan. Die tas neem ik altijd mee, want er kunnen heel veel boeken in die - ook niet onbelangrijk in dit land - daarin droog zullen blijven.
We hebben ook enige tijd doorgebracht in het ark bij het Weteringplantsoen, kijkend naar de bootjes en honden zwemmend in het water en me realiserend dat C. en Max de Hond hier ook menig uurtje moeten hebben doorgebracht.

Received this week (ordered at Coco Records (Zaamdam) - good service) From the Reach of Sonny Landreth (with other favourite Robben Ford) en Same Old Man of John Hiatt. Have not listened to these yet, will do that during long hours in train (coming Saturday). As always with Sonny's CD's great artwork by Megan Barra.
